Mumbai Indians defeat Guyana | Match Preview Mumbai Indian vs Guyana

September 16, Durban: Post the 2 defeats Mumbai Indians won their third match of CLT20 against Guyana a side that is still gripping with the fact that it is playing in at first class level. Fielding an unchanged squad from the previous match, Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and decided to bat first in overcast conditions.

Tendulkar and Shikhar Dhawan were all business from the word go as they have no option of loosing anymore matches. There was a sense of urgency in their body language, running between the wickets and they were off to a flier with 33 coming in the first four overs. Yet, the shot-making left much to be desired. Tendulkar led a charmed life as the ball flew high off his bat to fall in no man’s land on more than one occasion. He was dropped too, at long off, much to the dismay of Chris Barnwell, the bowler.

Guyana had managed to pull things back a bit after the fourth over and Tendulkar ,realising the importance of putting up a big score, got stumped while trying to accelerate the pace. He made 48 and at 82 for 1 in 11 overs, Mumbai’s innings looked headed towards an in-between score of 150-160. Dhawan’s wicket followed by Saurabh Tiwary’s in the fifteenth over reaffirmed this notion. Kieron Pollard, who had been promoted to No. 3, though, had different plans.

The burly all-rounder only dealt in sixes on the evening, with the ball disappearing off his bat into the darkness of the Durban night all too frequently. His 72 came off just 30 deliveries and with the laws of the game not yet allowing for a captain to set a field beyond the boundary, there was little that Ramnaresh Sarwan could do in the face of Pollard’s towering nine sixes. Mumbai finished with an imposing total of 184.

Sarwan had not been unhappy about losing the toss earlier in the day, saying that Guyana’s strength was in its batting department. This wasn’t too apparent when the chase began. Sewnarine Chattergoon was the first to fall, caught at slip by Duminy off Lasith Malinga, in just the second over of the innings. Travis Dowlin was the next to go with the score at 45, caught at long on off Bravo’s bowling.

With 114 required from the last 10 overs, Guyana clearly needed to up the ante but MI’s bowlers kept them in check. Ali Murtaza was difficult to negotiate as were Harbhajan Singh and Dwayne Bravo. Sarwan struggled to get the big shots going and eventually fell four short of what would have been his maiden half-century at CLT20. Narsingh Deonarine, Chris Barnwell and Jonathan Foo all fell trying to take make some valiant runs. Mumbai coasted to a 31–run win and were for the first time, since the tournament began, the better side on the night.

Brief Scores – Mumbai Indians 184 for 4 (Kieron Pollard 72*, Sachin Tendulkar 48, Devendra Bishoo 3-34) beat Guyana 153 for 6 (Ramnaresh Sarwan 46, Dwayne Bravo 2-18, Harbhajan Singh 2-31) by 31 runs

Man-of-the-match – Kieron Pollard for his unbeaten 30-ball 72 that lit up the Kingsmead skyline on the night.

Chennai Super Kings trashed Wayamba by 97 runs | CSK beat Wayamba a report

Wayamba Elevens skipper J Mubarak won the toss and elected to bowl first against Chennai Super Kings in their Champions League T20 match on Wednesday at Centurion, Tshwane. This was a decision that the Wayamba captain would regret as Chennai who have already won their first match against Central Stags have now moved a step closer to semi-finals spot by defeating Wayamba. Chennai went into the match with an unchanged side that beat Stags. On the other hand Wayamba made two changes from the squad that lost to Warriors. Isuru Udana and Shalika Karunanayake comes in palce for Farveez Maharoof and Mahela Udawatte.

CSK trashed Wayamba by 97 runs an embarrasing defeat as nothing really worked for the Wayamba Eleven. Suresh Raina and Murali Vijay scored breezy half centuries as Chennai Super Kings crushed Wayamba by 97 runs to register their second consecutive win in the Champions League Twenty20 on Wednesday. With two victories out of as many matches in Group A, CSK have inched a step closer towards the semifinal race while Wayamba faces elimination.

Sent into bat, Raina scored a blistering 44-ball 87 while Vijay made 68 off 48 deliveries to enable Chennai post a formidable 200/3 in their allotted 20 overs. Raina and Vijay complimented each other well and shared a 137-run second wicket stand that came off just 72 deliveries.Raina bejeweled his innings with six boundaries and as many sixes while Vijay found the fence nine times and crossed it once.

For Wayamba Chanaka Welegadara picked up two wickets for 47 runs off his four overs. Chasing the huge target, Wayamba never got off their hooks and were finally bundled out for 103 in 17.1 overs. Wayamba had a horrible start to their run chase as they lost two of their top-order batsmen inside the third over with just 18 runs on the board. Well a match the Wayamba Elevens would like to wipe from memory

BushRangers defeat Stags | Victoria BushRangers defeat Central District Stags

Aaron Finch carried his bat through the innings for Victoria and played the knock of the tournament, hitting an unbeaten 93 off 60 balls to chase down a target of 165 runs posted by Central Stags at the SuperSport Park on Wednesday. His knock was punctuated by 11 fours and 3 sixes and brought about Victoria's much-needed first win in the Champions League.

Aiming to turn the tables, the teams suffered illness worries ahead of the game. The big blow for Victoria came in way of Brad Hodge being unavailable. On the other hand, Adam Milne and Mitchell McClenaghan woke up sick for the Stags.

A win for either team could prolong their stay in the tournament, making this match important for both of them. The toss went Bushrangers' way who chose to bat first.

After being asked to bowl, Peter Siddle struck twice in the first over for his team, taking out Peter Ingram (0) and Timothy Weston (2), which left the Kiwi team with a recovery job early in the match.

The experienced duo of Adam Sinclair and Jamie How tried to prevent any further casualties but could do it for only 27 more runs. A slash off Sinclair (14), while facing John Hastings, brought out a dive by wicketkeeper Mathew Wade who pouched it nicely, leaving the Stags reeling at 30/3.

Sinclair's dismissal followed the recovery phase Stags were hoping for, with George worker providing the missing thrust in the Stags. In fact, Workers' intent rubbed off to skipper How whose unconvincing knock started showing signs of coming back on track.

The partnership swelled up to 53 but unfortunately that's where it ended for the Stags with Worker (29 off 25) being snapped up by the spinner Bryce McGain.

Redbacks defeat Mumbai Indians by 5 Wickets | Mumbai Indians Loss

The Redbacks sneaked home to a stunning victory by beating the Mumbai Indians by 5 wickets in the final over, chasing down Mumbai's massive 180 in their second Champions League twenty20 match at Kingsmead, Durban on Tuesday.Replying to Mumbai Indians 180, South Australia Redbacks Openers got off to a flying start with a 112 runs stand for the first wicket. Mumbai were abysmal in the field and paid the price for their shoddy display. Quite a few fumbles in the field and some serious drop catches overdid their fine effort with the bat.

Jonty Rhodes will be a most unhappy man. The South African fielding coach of the Mumbai Indians was known for scorching the field and holding on to impossible catches and for effecting flying run-outs. But his wards on Tuesday let the game slip through their fingers as they lost out on the all-important two points that they badly needed to keep their chances alive in the Champions League T20.

Skipper Klinger (50) and Harris (56) shared an 81-ball 112-run opening partnership to set the tone for the successful runchase as Redbacks reached the target with three balls to spare and inched closer to the semifinal berth.

Opener Harris was dropped twice as he hammered Mumbai Indian bowlers making full use of the droped catches. But Murtaza brought Mumbai back into the game, getting rid off Harris. An over later, Lasith Malinga dismissed the other opener Klinger, who had just reached his fifty.

Quick wickets gave Mumbai Indians the chance to get back in to tha match but Christian (16) scored some useful runs towards the end but the cameos from Borgas (14 not out off 5) and Cooper (19 not out off 5) came in pretty handy in the win for their side.

Earlier after winning the toss and batting first, a brilliant cameo by Saurabh Tiwary and Kieron Pollard inspired Mumbai Indians to a healthy total of 180/7 in their quota of 20 overs. Tiwary started his innings in a careful manner but hit top gear in 16th over when he hit Aaron O'Brien for 25 runs in his last over. Tiwary hit four massive sixes and a boundary in his knock of 44 form 25 deliveries.

Windies all-rounder Pollard was in a destructive mode from the word go as he destroyed the opposition bowling attack all over the park in his swashbuckling innings of 36 from 21 balls before he was caught in the deep.

Mumbai Indians got off to the worst possible start against Redbacks when they lost opener Shikhar Dhawan in the second over. Dhawan (2 off 7) was caught behind on the bowling of Gary Putland.

Captain Sachin Tendulkar soon followed his fellow opener as he was clean bowled by Aaron O'Brien for 20 from 17 balls trying to go for the full monty.

Mumbai Indians were pushed back further after South African batsmen JP Duminy (3 off 6) was caught and bowled by Aaron O'Brien. Mumbai Indians were struggling at 47/3 after 7.3 overs after Duminy's wicket.

Middle order batsman Ambati Rayudu looked promising ever since he strode into the middle but his inning couldn't mature into anything big after he was brilliantly caught by Daniel Harris in the deep of the bowling of Cullen Bailey for 38 from 32 deliveries.

Dwayne Bravo finished the Mumbai Indians innings in style with 22 from 12 balls. Mumbai Indians smashed 122 runs from the last ten overs.

For Redbacks Aaron O'Brien was pick of the bowlers with 2/49. Gary Putland, Cullen Bailey, Shaun Tait took one scalp each.

At the end of the game the reactions on the faces of owners Mukesh and Nita Ambani said it all. Despair and disbelief is what was writ large on their faces, especially Mukesh bhai, who sat next to filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra and would have never have expected such a climax in a roller-coaster script that seemed going the happy ending way at the intermission.
Mumbai had fought back brilliantly while batting after they lost three crucial wickets, including that of Sachin Tendulkar, with the score on 47. Soon after Ambati Rayudu exited and Saurabh Tiwary and Keiron Pollard came together to put on a shock and awe treatment as they belted the Redbacks to the outbacks and one seriously began to think that Mumbai finally had it within them to get to a total without having to be over reliant on Tendulkar. To their credit they managed to get to what looked like a sufficiently defendable score of 180.

Royal Challengers Bangalore trash the not so impressive Guyana | RCB defeat Guyana by 9 wickets

Royal Challengers Bangalore 106 for 1 (Kallis 43*) beat Guyana 103 (Kallis 3-16) by nine wickets

Royal Challengers Bangalore sauntered to victory against Guyana in the most one-sided game of the tournament so far, being the first game for Guyana at this level of T20 cricket they looked way out of their depth, as the highly rated Royal Challengers Bangalore took control right from the word go....

On a track where 345 runs had been scored in the evening's earlier game, Guyana poked and prodded their way to 103, a total Bangalore overhauled with the small matter of 46 deliveries remaining, giving the net run-rate an early boost. No statistic highlighted Guyana's ineffectual batting as much as the solitary boundary in a ten-over spell after the Powerplays.

None of their batsman, barring Christopher Barnwell to an extent, seemed at ease on a pitch which had some extra bounce to interest the South Africans in Bangalore's attack, and some early movement for Praveen Kumar. Opener Travis Dowlin was perhaps the most unsettled: in a 17-ball stay he was beaten, struck on the pads, squared up while defending, got inside edges, and mishit a pull towards the bowler before finally gloving a short ball to short fine leg.

That brought in Guyana's captain and most experienced batsman, Ramnaresh Sarwan. He struck an imperious six off the back foot over long-off but Kallis knocked back his off stump the following ball.

One of the concerns for Bangalore coming into the match was Rahul Dravid's fitness, barely recovering from a stomach bug. He dropped Sewnarine Chattergoon in the fourth over, a simple skier at square leg, in what was perhaps the only blemish in Bangalore's spotless performance. Chattergoon didn't make use of that opportunity though, run-out two overs later after being called for a non-existent single, caught well short by a Cameron White direct-hit from cover.

It was all too easy for Bangalore from then on. Even left-arm spinner Nayan Doshi and medium-pacer B Akhil, who together sent down the fifth bowler's quota, weren't attacked. At the end of the 12th over, with Guyana gasping at 60 for 4, the normally grim-faced Anil Kumble was relaxed enough to laugh and exchange a joke with the umpire.

Even the much-awaited entrance of Jonathan Foo didn't change Guyana's fortunes. He could only take a single off five balls before edging a rising delivery from Kallis, who removed Derwin Christian two balls later to finish with career-best figures. Towards the end of the innings, the only interest was in whether Guyana could reach triple digits, which they did thanks to a Barnwell swipe in the final over.

Guyana's bowlers had little chance of reining in the heavy-hitters of Bangalore, their only sliver of hope of pulling off an upset lay in getting early breakthroughs. Kallis and Dravid made sure there were no nasty surprises for the Bangalore fans in Centurion, who sang local chants though the game. Kallis put away two short and wide gifts in the first over for fours and followed it up with a sweetly-timed flick for six in the second. When Dravid helped himself to a couple of eye-catching fours in the fourth over, Bangalore had galloped to 31 for 0 and Guyana's day was turning into a total embarrassment.

South Australia Redbacks beat Highveld Lions by 11 runs | Redbacks vs Lions Highlights

South Australia Redbacks 178 for 7 (Klinger 78, Ferguson 47) beat Lions 167 for 8 (Petersen 56, Tait 3-36) by 11 runs

The 4th Airtel CLT20 match turned out to be a a battle of captains where Michael Klinger's 48-ball 78 for South Australia Redbacks outweighed Alviro Petersen's 35-ball 56 for the Lions. Klinger's effort not only lasted longer than his counterpart's, he could draw on more support from the other end too: Callum Ferguson, the new vice-captain, raised 97 in 9.3 overs with him after a slow start, a South Australian third-wicket record.

The key moments in the big chase, which seemed on for more than half the innings, came in the 11th and 13th overs. With 86 required off 58 and seven wickets in hand, Neil McKenzie called for a second only to see Gary Putland - at sweeper-cover - fire in a throw right on top of the stumps. So alert were South Australia that Graham Manou, the keeper who has been relieved of captaincy duties, had his keeping glove off, completed the run-out, and then got the non-striker out too. Just in case.

Two overs later, Daniel Christian, who had got Vaughn van Jaarsveld in his first over, produced the final game-breaker with an accurate inswinger that Petersen missed and was hit in front. Seventy-one off 44 was always going to be too much for the lower order, especially with Shaun Tait's pace lurking.

For a major part of the first innings, though, it didn't seem Lions would be chasing that much. South Australia managed just 19 runs in the first five overs, and it seemed they would struggle without the big-hitting services of Kieron Pollard and Shahid Afridi. Another "outsider", though, their new captain and Victorian Klinger, made up for it, almost single-handedly.

Klinger moved to South Australia two seasons ago and played no part in their qualification for the Champions League, but if there were question marks over his walking into the new-look side as captain, they exist no more after his first half-century in the format.

Petersen, who took over captaincy from Thami Tsolekile, the man who led the Lions to their domestic T20 final, continued resisting with the bat, finding a way to score off bowlers other than Tait, keeping Lions in touch with the rate, even ahead of it by the halfway mark. Wickets kept falling at the other end, though, and his dismissal signalled the end of the contest.

CSK defeats Stags by 57 runs | Chennai Super Kings beat Stags by 57 runs in CLT20 | Airtel CLT20 Live Scores

DURBAN: Subramaniam Badrinath struck an unbeaten 52 to save the batting before a disciplined effort by the bowlers as Chennai Super Kings beat Central Stags by 57 runs in a Champions League Twenty20 match on Saturday.

Badrinath's counterattacking 52 from 42 balls was mainly responsible for CSK reaching 151/4 after they were down 5/2 in the second over and 48/3 at halfway mark after electing to bat. He was supported by Srikkanth Anirudha (42) and the duo shared 73 runs from 49 balls for the fourth wicket to take CSK score past 150 on a spongy Kingsmead pitch which saw odd balls kicking up to trouble the batsmen. This batting was later complimented by the CSK bowlers who managed to bowl out the Stags  for 94 in 18.1 overs to start their campaign on a winning note. Chasing 152 for a win, the New Zealand champion side initially looked like they would stand up for a challenge but after they lost their first wicket in the fourth over they were reckoned out of the chase.

Pacer Laxmipathy Balaji was the most successful CSK bowler with 3/20 from his four overs while Muttiah Muralitharan, Ravichandran Ashwin and Doug Bollinger claiming two wickets each. Opener Peter Ingram was the first Central Stags batsman to go in the fourth over for six as he top-edged an Albie Morkel delivery to Suresh Raina at cover at team score of 12/1. He was earlier dropped while on one in the second ball of their innings by Ravichandran Ashwin. CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni introduced off-spinner Ashwin in the sixth over and got the result immediately in the form of Jamie How's wicket. From then on it was slaughter for the Central District Stags.

This once again proves the superiority of Dhoni's Captaincy and all-round performance of the team

Wayamba cruises to a 7 wicket win against the Warriors | Live Wayamba Elevens vs Warriors | Wayamba Elevens won the toss and elected to bat

Wayamba Elevens who had earlier won the and elected to bat at the second match held at St George Park, Port Elizabeth, South Africa proved the decision right by winning the match by 7 wickets.
Wayamba Elevens had earlier scored 153/9 in 20 Overs (1st innings) of the match.

Mark Boucher’s and Justin Kreusch’s 63-run partnership led the Warriors to a seven-wicket win over Wayamba Elevens in Group A’s opening match of the Champions League Twenty20 on Saturday.Boucher raced to 40 not out from 26 balls and Kreusch made a composed 37 not out as the South Africa T20 champions cruised to 156-3, chasing down Wayamba’s 153-9 with 10 balls to spare.Colin Ingram made 34 and Warriors captain David Jacobs added 26 at the top of the order. Earlier, Juan Theron took three wickets, including two in the first over of the match, to help restrict Wayamba to a below-par total.

Opener Jeewantha Kulatunga top-scored for Wayamba with 59 from 44 balls and wicketkeeper-batsman Kushal Perera crashed three sixes in his 39 from 24 to lead Wayamba’s recovery.“I think the wickets up front played a big role,” Boucher said. “We always knew about the Mendis factor so we wanted to go pretty hard up front. We got off to a flyer, which allowed us to settle down in the middle and then finish off with a fling.”

The Sri Lankan team was on the back foot from the second ball of the match when the experienced Mahela Jayawardene flashed at a wide delivery from Theron and was caught by Kreusch at slip. Udawatte fell four balls later to a diving catch by Nicky Boje. Kulatunga and Perera set about rebuilding Wayamba’s effort with a 60-run partnership after skipper Jehan Mubarak, who won the toss and chose to bat first, fell for a scratchy 9 from 16 balls.Ashwell Prince’s early dismissal for the Warriors, for just 10, was brushed aside by the home team as two half-century partnerships took them to victory. Skipper Jacobs and Colin Ingram shared a 52-run partnership, with both players striking glorious boundaries through the off side. Two of those fours came off Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis. Mendis hit back in the next over to break the partnership with a ball, which angled in and removed Jacobs’ leg stump. After Rangana Herath, the second of Wayamba’s three-man spin attack, followed by tempting Ingram into a top edge, the Warriors slipped to 93-3. But Boucher and Kreusch took the Warriors home. After a watchful start, Boucher exploded into life by blasting leg-spinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi for six, six and then four, all through the leg side, in the 14th over to put the Warriors within reach. And a heave for four through midwicket from the South Africa wicketkeeper off Mendis’ final over effectively sealed it.

Highveld Lions beat Mumbai Indians by 9 Runs in the first match of the Airtel CLT20

September 10, Johannesburg: The Airtel CLT20 2010 got under way with Mumbai Indians winning the toss against the local favourites Highveld Lions at the Wanderers Stadium. Sachin Tendulkar opted to bowl first, although the Highveld Lions were restricted to 186 for 5, the Mumbai Indians fell short of reaching the target by 9 runs.

Brief Scores:
Highveld Lions 186 for 5 (Jonathan Vandiar 71, Neil McKenzie 56*, Lasith Malinga 3-33) beat Mumbai Indians 177 for 6 (Sachin Tendulkar 69, Shikhar Dhawan 32, Shane Burger 2-33) by  9 runs

Match Preview:
The Lions lost a couple of wickets early on but went on to make steady progress to bring up their first 50 runs in 7.2 overs. Opener Jonathan Vandiar batted at a brisk pace and put on a partnership of 43 for the third wicket with Vaughn van Jaarsveld. When van Jaarsveld fell with the score at 81, Vandiar, in the company of Neil McKenzie continued the onslaught on the Mumbai bowlers and hit them all around the the Wanderers, a big six off Malinga over mid-wicket standing out in his 48-ball knock of 71.

Neil McKenzie, the most experienced of the Lions batsmen, took centre stage at the fall of Vandiar’s wicket and ensured that the Lions innings did not lose momentum at the end. A 30-ball cameo of 56 proved just why he is such a dangerous player. The Lions ended their innings with a most impressive score of 186 for the loss of five wickets. Zaheer Khan, coming back from injury, had a forgettable day having given away 45 runs while Lasith Malinga was the pick of the MI bolwers with figures of 3 for 33.

MI began their innings with Tendulkar and Shikhar Dhawan added mixed caution with aggression which help them get a 50 run partnership in 6.5 overs. Dhawan batted well for his 32 off 30 deliveries before falling for an ill advised reverse sweep off Aaron Phangiso. Ambati Rayudu was run-out shortly after but Tendulkar, accompanied by JP Duminy were particularly severe on the left-arm spin of Phangiso, the bowler going for 26 runs in two overs.

Tendulkar was dropped by Alviro Petersen in the eighth over, scored 69 and his stay at the crease was a study in the art of T20 batting. He fell to Shane Burger against the run of play and his dismissal triggered a collapse with Duminy, Kieron Pollard, Rajagopal Sathish and Harbhajan Singh unable to guide Mumbai home. In the end the Lions bowlers held their nerve and bettered the formidable Mumbai side to delight South African fans and set the tournament off to an interesting start.
